Newfoundland and Labrador Founder Population
As a result of unique social, demographic, and economic influences, the Newfoundland and Labrador population has produced several genetic isolates characterized by large kindreds and a high coefficient of kinship. Genetic homogeneity resulting from founder effects with little environmental variability provides the opportunity to identify genes in Mendelian and complex diseases. The Newfoundland and Labrador Founder Population is internationally recognized and has been ranked 6th in the world in its significance for genetics research (Parfrey et al. KI 2002; Service S et al. Nat Genet 2006).
Heritability and Genetic Linkage Resources
NewLab collaborates with the Population Therapeutics Research Group (PTRG) St John’s Canada (http://www.med.mun.ca/ptrg/) which provides researchers and research companies with better access to the Newfoundland and Labrador population, prescription, and clinical health data. In about 10 – 20 minutes, their software is able to automatically generate a patient’s complete family pedigree within a 70% degree of accuracy; something that could take months to complete manually. For researchers, this information is a powerful tool in identifying potential genetic predispositions and potential genetic linkages to conditions and diseases.
Electronic Health Record
The Newfoundland and Labrador Centre for Health Information (NLCHI) has become the most comprehensive health information centre of its kind in Canada, and is a model for other jurisdictions. The Research and Evaluation Division of NLCHI prepares and analyzes statistical health information from databases of coded information. This division works closely with NewLab to carry out applied health research for industry. Perhaps their most significant undertaking from the pharmaceutical industry’s perspective is the provincial pharmacy network. This network connects all pharmacies across the province to electronically track and analyze drug prescription information. Our ability to associate prescription information with clinical results will provide great insight into drug effectiveness, adverse effects, etc.
